Hello Canine Lovers! You may be curious as to what this post is all about from the title, to answer your question it is about Medical Detection Dogs.
Dogs are extraordinary creatures and I have always been amazed by their abilities. This year at the paws in the park Detling show I visited the Medical Detection Dogs charity stall and spoke to a woman called Bridget who told me all about their Bio Detection dogs and to say my mind was blown away is an understatement.
The Bio Detection dogs are trained to detect the minute odours associated with many cancers and other diseases. This work could help scientists and medics develop faster, cheaper and non-invasive methods of diagnosis that could impact thousands of lives.
Whilst working in conjunction with oncologists, scientists and NHS Trusts The Medical Detection Dogs are also continuing studies into the detection of breast and urological cancers and have already published several scientific papers about their work. Below is a video showing the dogs in training.
Amazing isn't it? In addition to all of this they are also exploring the dogs ability to detect a number of other cancers and diseases including: colorectal cancer, Parkinsons disease, maleria and various animal cancers.
At the moment the Medical Detection Dogs cancer work has two main aims, they are:
- To assist scientists through their research into the development of electronic systems (E noses) that will assist in the early detection of cancer through cheap non-invasive tests.
- In the short term, our cancer dogs could provide additional testing for cancers that are currently difficult to diagnose reliably, such as prostate cancer.
Wouldn't it be amazing to have dogs detect cancer in humans much earlier then it is currently possible? If you would like to fund such an amazing charity or want to find out more please visit their website (link below) where you can also find out the other diseases dogs can detect.
To finish off this post I wanted to show you this video all about puppy sponsorship and how you can make a huge difference for such a worth cause!
